As part of an IMLS Grant Project to improve the search engine optimization of the Montana State Univeristy ScholarWorks institutional repository website we converted a sample set of Montana State University student theses and dissertations into RDF. The entities that we created are now hosted in a triple store and accessible online. The data in the triple store is syndicated using Pubby. An example of how the data is displayed in the browser can be found here
Schema.org was used as the primary vocabulary for developing the RDF. In order to best describe the theses and dissertations in detail, an Extension Vocabulary was developed that could be used in tandum with the terms foundin Schema.org
People entities were created from the various name strings that were parsed out of the original Dublin Core metadata records. These include faculty members, university staff and students that were involved in the creation or review of Montana State University theses and dissertations.
Concepts were created from subject headings that we could not match to existing subject controlled vocabularies such as LCSH.
Organizations were created from the department, school and universities that were encoded in the Dublin Core records as simple string values.
